Description

Bending magnets finds numerous applications in particle accelerators, mass spectrometers and electromagnetic isotope separators among others. BARC has designed, developed and installed bending magnets for beam transport line, mass spectrometers and mass separators. The key performance indicators for bending magnets are bending angle and magnetic field homogeneity. BARC has developed magnetic measurement systems for qualification of these magnets, based on Hall probe and planar coils. Hall probe-based system consists of X-Y-R-theta-Z motion stage; laser tracker and Group3 Hall probes. Laser tracker is used to measure the axis of beam bending to which the rotary axis of the motion stage is aligned using X-Y stage. The Hall probe mounted on an arm, scan along the R-theta plane at different Z axis points and magnetic field is recorded for pre-decided theta steps. Post processing of the data results in bending angle and magnetic field homogeneity. This approach is not suitable for H-type bending magnet for which planar coils are designed and used for measurement of bending angle. Coupled with fast digital integrator and Hall probe at median plane, simple calculations yields bending angle. The paper will discuss these systems which have been put to use for characterization of many bending magnets.
