Description

The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade longitudinal gradient dipole magnets have been characterized using a 4-axis motion control stage system with a 3-axis Hall probe to create 3D field maps. A model of the poles, average mid-plane, exterior fiducial points, and the definition of the magnet-frame was generated for each magnet using a pre-survey prior to measurements. The dipole magnets were installed on the adjacent support bench in a nominal position, that is mechanically decoupled from the Hall probe motion control stage system. The location of the magnet-frame was then surveyed relative to the motion control stage-frame. The positions and angles of the 3-axis Hall probe elements were calibrated in-situ in the magnet frame. The motion vectors of the Hall probe were transformed from the stage-frame to the magnet-frame, allowing the field and positional data to be expressed in the magnet frame. The details of the Hall probe measurement system, the stage-frame to magnet-frame and Hall probe transformations will be presented.
