Description

There are currently nearly 40 synchrotron radiation sources in operation worldwide, with a large community of scientific users. These facilities are essential for research in fields ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and materials science. In addition, several other synchrotron radiation sources are in various stages of design, construction and commissioning. These new sources promise to further increase the capacity and scope of scientific research and to contribute to significant technological advances.

These workshops have provided a forum for synchrotron radiation safety experts to meet and discuss specific safety and radiation protection issues at the facilities. During the meetings, topics such as the best methods to control radiation exposure, the implementation of strong safety policies, and technological innovations that can improve worker and facility protection are addressed. This type of dialogue is beneficial to the design, operation, and upgrade of current and future synchrotron radiation facilities and beamlines. The exchange of experience and knowledge between different research centers contributes to the development of international safety standards that can be adopted by all new facilities.
